It was my first time at the actual gym this morning since before Christmas. It struck me, as I pushed weights up and down, how January can be full of good intentions and that we can often do with some encouragement to try new things or work harder at the things we like doing [and which we secretly know are good for us. My gym friends of various ages, shapes and sizes are a great source of motivation to me and to each other]. We all go incredibly early to give our day the best start, we chat to each other, catch up while rowing or running, and generally have a brilliant social time… with exercise. Cycling home afterwards the hill felt a little steeper, but I was full of the pleasure you can feel after a challenging exercise session.

When friend and fellow poet Sam Bartle contacted me before Christmas it was to share an exciting idea he had to start a journal with the strapline ‘the verse is all’. He’s seeking submissions of poetry [up to three per poet] which in his own words can ‘celebrate the resonance of poetry and to platform the work of other poets’.

This could be your regular poetry workout!

Find out more from Sam’s journal and bio pages below, and grow your poetic muscles…

There will be a printed version available and Sam intends to nominate work for literary prizes.
